Testing Will's Aerobic Threshold

Testing Aerobic Threshold

As part of Will’s developing training programme he has been tested for his aerobic or functional threshold – the point just before the body starts to generate lactic acid and slow down. Having identified the heart rate that indicates Will’s functional threshold, his coach Scott Holmes (Hillingdon CC) has calculated four different zones to allow him to train to develop a combination of power and stamina.

The testing session lasted 1.5 hours on a watt bike that measures heart rate, cadence and power output of the rider. You can see 40 seconds of the test in the video.

Will is also competing in regular evening time trials, with his best performance to date being 26 minutes 48 seconds for a 10 mile ride. He now has his sights set on 24 minutes for 10 miles.

Will Houghton - Sponsored rider-Update

It has been a busy month or so since Will took delivery of his new Cinellie Saetta Sprint from CycleTech.

National Youth

The bike’s first outing was at the National Youth Circuit Race Series at Hillingdon. The sixty strong field included national champions, and on a sunny afternoon on the 7^th May Will made a strong start, getting himself straight into the leading group. But Will’s race was to come to an abrupt end only one mile in when a rider in front of him drifted off line at a downhill corner forcing him over the handlebars at 20 miles an hour.

Having ‘bounced’ a couple of times Will was run over by two following riders. Once he had been stopped by first aiders from getting back on his bike, he spent 45 minutes having a lot of gravel and dirt removed from his shoulders, thighs, arms and hands. The fist aid was followed by a trip to A&E in order to check that no bones were broken. We’re glad to say that despite losing quite a lot of skin Will did not suffer any major damage.

Chiltern 100

Once his wounds had healed Will was back training and took part in the Chiltern 100 Sportive on Sunday 5^th June, posting a creditable 03:25:48 for the 59 mile route. This was the 3^rd fastest time for the 324 riders that took on the Corto Fondo, and the fastest for an under 18 by some way.

Omega Thorney Island Circuit

On a very wet, cold and grey Sunday (12^th June) Will took part in the Omega Thorney Island Circuit race, coming second in what seemed more of an eight mile sprint rather than a road race.

For the next month and a half Will is combining his training with time trials in Bucks and a short series of Saturday races at Redbridge Cycle centre.

Martin Wilkins of High Wycombe based Cycle Tech hands over a new Cinelli Saetta Sprint carbon road bike to racing cyclist Will Houghton (15) of Great Missenden. The bike is part of Will’s new sponsorship deal with the mobile bicycle maintenance business.

Houghton, despite only starting to race six months ago, has already been selected for British Cycling Regional School of Racing and is trying for a place in the Central region youth race team.

Under the sponsorship deal Cycle Tech provides both the very latest racing equipment and all the necessary servicing and parts to keep Will at the front of the pack.

Will rides with Amersham Road Cycling Club most weekends and is trained by Thame based Scott Holmes of Hillingdon Cycle Club.

Just spent 2 days at Velotech Cycling Ltd Training Centre. The course is run by Graeme Freestone King. Graeme is very knowledgeable and has been in bicycle trade for 30 years. Training Centre and workshop: Adjacent to Longstaff Cycles, Albert Street, Chesterton, Staff ST5 7JF (Longstaff cycles are internationally known for their quality work in steel framebuilding. Seeing there workshop is worth a visit.)

Disc Brake fix!

A couple of cyclists, who had removed there front wheel, to carry in the car! Had trouble with there front brakes, The brake lever had been pressed. After refitting there front wheel. The brake was binding.

The best way to stop this happening is to use a plastic wedge between the brake pads. (Supplied in replacement brake kits.)

One cyclist unable to ride! Due to aluminium spoke nipple corrosion. Aluminium nipples have about one-third the mass of a brass spoke nipple and save on the overall weight of a wheel-set. However, alloy nipples are not recommended in wet or salty riding conditions due to corrosion potential.

Continental Cyclocross Race Tyres 700 x 35c 85psi

Cyclo Cross covers the whole season of weather conditions. In the early months when the ground is hard and dry riders favour fast rolling tyres with smoother tread to give them enough grip but allow them to utilise the fast conditions. A typical width of tyre for dry conditions ranges from 30-34mm. For wet and slippery conditions in the mud, tyres with extra grip are the preferred choice. With knobbly tread remaining narrow at around 30mm, the narrower the tyre the better it will cut through the mud. The air pressure in a tyre can be vital in order to cope with the conditions and can make a huge difference to the feel and performance of the bicycle. In the dry, higher pressures can be run (typically 65-75PSI) which will roll fast and provide enough grip with the firm ground. However, when the ground is wet the lower the pressure the more grip the tyre will have. The problem that can arise with normal clincher tyres (with a bead that is inflated by and inner tube onto the rim) is that running low pressures can cause the inner to be pinched and puncture. For this reason many who ride in cross races will prefer to use tubular or 'sew ups' as they are a self contained unit glued onto the rim and remove run the danger of pinch punctures. Many who use tubular tyres will run around 50 PSI when the ground is muddy. Tubes can also be ridden on without the tyre rolling, so if the rider does puncture the cycle can be ridden carefully back to the pits for a spare. It is worth spending time looking for the correct tyre and is a worthwhile investment as good quality rubber will perform well, last longer and is less likely to puncture. Above all, mechanical failures can affect the result in these gruelling races, so using the correct equipment is vital.

Cyclo-Cross is a strange mix of off road riding and road cycling. Originating from Belgium the sport pre dates mountain biking and was the original form of off road that riders used during the winter to keep themselves fit, improve strength and increase their bicycle handling skills. The races take place on off road circuits normally of around one mile in length that include a mixture of rough wooded sections, grass areas, technical sections, barriers that have to be run across and sharp slopes to be ridden or run up and then descended. This means that successful riders need to have great bike skills, aerobic endurance, explosive power and the ability to jump on and off the cycle without breaking their rhythm and run. Races last around an hour and are a true test of fitness and skill as anyone who has ridden narrow tyres off road can testify. The season lasts from September through to January which means that the bikers have to cope with all kinds of conditions through the winter from sun and dry ground to snow and ice.

Frames & Forks:

Cyclo Cross bicycles look to the untrained eye just like a standard road bicycle. You might notice the nobbly tyres and the different brake systems, but with drop handlebars, 700c wheels and road components they are hard to differentiate.

Frames:
The fames differ greatly from road versions with geometries that have shorter top tubes for a more upright and controlled position (similar to that on mountain bike). They have higher bottom brackets for clearance when hopping over obstacles and even greater clearance for the pedals from the rough terrain. Frames can be manufactured in a number of materials including steel, aluminium, carbon and titanium but in general they will be heavier than their road alternatives as they are made to be stiff and strong to cope with the high stresses that they have to withstand. The main triangle tends not to include water bottle cages as they interfere with the rider's ability to throw the bike over the shoulder when running. Top tubes also tend to be flat for comfort on the shoulder and the cabling is routed over the top of the top tube so that it cannot be caught on the cyclist or obstacles.

Forks:

As with road bikes the forks are rigid and designed for the 700C wheels, however, they differ as they are designed to give increased clearance for wider tyres and mud. They are also designed to allow cantilever brakes to be fitted onto special bosses. Manufacturers produce forks in steel, aluminium and more commonly carbon. Full carbon forks are stiff, lightweight and can cope with the worst that the demanding sport of cross has to offer.

Pedals:

With the amount of running that is involved the preferred choice of pedals and shoes are those used for MTB riding. The pedals such as various SPD systems are good at shedding mud and can be clipped in from both sides which can be essential when jumping on and off the bike. The cleats are small and are recessed into the shoes amongst the tread on the bottom of the footwear so that they do not interfere when running. The shoes are designed with stiff soles that are still flexible enough to be run on with studs and have enough tread to give good grip when running on slippery ground and the steep slopes which are common place.
Gears:

The gear ratios used on the bicycles tend to be easier than on the road in order to cope with the slower terrain and sharp slopes. Typically on a road bike the chainsets run 53/39 on the chainset and 12-25 on the cassette. However, cyclo cross bikes use compact sets typically using 48-36 and 12-27 on the cassette. This will depend on the nature of the course being ridden, but in general these ratios will provide enough range to cope with the challenging terrain that most courses are made up of. Apart from the gearing the gear systems are standard road components from the manufacturer's groupsets ranges from Campagnolo and Shimano. Ten speed is standard with these companies, but many who race cyclo cross still prefer to run older nine speed components as the wider spacing of the gears can be less prone to clog with mud. However the difference is so small that most are moving to ten speed.

Brakes:

Nearly all cyclo cross bikes will run cantilever brakes that work using a simple cable pulley system, although design can vary between manufacturers. They offer great clearance with their minimal look and can cope with the muddiest of conditions as they are designed not to clog up and slow the wheel. These brakes fit onto the bosses that come as standard on cross frames and forks. Some have started to investigate using hydraulic disc brakes as seen on MTB bicycles but the extra weight tends to override the undoubted stopping power and most still use cantilevers. On some designs cyclists use extra brake levers attached to the top of the bars that allow the rider to brake whilst on the tops of the bars. This can provide a lot more control and alternative hand positions, but most riders still prefer to use the standard STI levers.

Alternative Uses:

Cyclo-Cross bicycles have a variety of uses aside from being off-road. The strong frame, easy gear ratios, standard road wheels and upright geometry make them ideal for winter riding, commuting and fast off road leisure riding.

Dr Sludge: This is generally put in before you have a puncture and sits in the inner tube and is forgotten. It works without you even being aware that it is working. The disadvantage is that quite a number of 'Presta' valves do not have removable cores and therefore cannot be used. In this case you need to buy a ready filled Dr Sludge inner tube which are also available. The disadvantage is that they do add a small amount of weight which might effect some racing bikes.

Slime can be messy! When removing a valve!

Protection Tapes: These give good protection but the tyres must be kept fully inflated. Otherwise they will slip and can cause you punctures. Again the racing fraternity might notice the weight.

Damaged rim tape. This rim tape was removed!

Marks on the tube are from rubbing from the rim tape. New tube fitted!

This Sunday 11th October. I joined with Michal and David and members from the CTC. On there Sunday ride out.
I was the youngest on this ride haha. Good ride we left Great Kingshill car park just after 9.30 and arrived at the goat centre at 11 for coffee and cake. The morning stated off dry with rain on the way back. But it was still enjoyable ride and great company.

I take customers details. They drop there bike to me, with the key to there lock. If they are commuting to London. I would take cash payment or text them my bank details with the amount and they would pay on-line banking. I would lock there bike up in the bike racks. Put there key and invoice in to a plastic bag, and I would leave for them to collect from the taxi rank. Also I have a sign board advertising I am there every Wednesday from 6am. And I also do while you wait repairs. If they don’t pay on-line, they would leave payment cash or cheque when they collect there bike lock key.

The Casual cyclist. Tuesday Night Ride

This ride out, first started in bike week. Tuesday 16th June 2009. There was 11 riders in total. Starting at the White Lion Pub. Cryers Hill, High Wycombe.
And cycling around 20 miles. We all enjoyed the ride, so decided to keep it going and meeting up at 7pm every Tuesday. This month October we have been meeting at 6pm and cycling just over a 1 hour and we are down to 3/4 riders. Lost some riders during the summer holidays and hadn’t realised we are still continuing. We are looking at going out and meeting up Sunday mornings, at 10 am.

The ride is for fun and to encourage people into cycling. If you know a good ride, in the area we would be happy to hear from you as we are always looking for different rides

Sustrans Charity Ride on the Phoenix Trail

Sponsored cycle ride along the Phoenix Trail. Princes Risborough and Thame.
Riders can start at any time between 12 noon and 2.00pm either from the sports ground at Horsenden, Princes Risborough or from the town square in Thame. The total return distance is about 13 miles but participants need not cycle the full distance. To find more about how to join the ride and raise funds for Sustrans the national sustainable transport charity.
This will be a great opportunity for families, particularly those with young children, to enjoy a gentle traffic free ride and at the same time raise funds for Sustrans. It is not widely recognised that the Phoenix Trail is part of the National Cycle Network developed and managed by Sustrans the national sustainable transport charity. This ride is one of many taking place throughout the country under the banner FRESH AIR MILES. From this national event Sustrans are hoping to raise £30,000 to support ongoing projects.
